This course presents the student with two aspects for effective writing in the legal environment: citation skills and legal research skills. Students will learn and practice the basic skills necessary for identifying, locating, and using legal resources, including primary sources of statutory and case law; secondary authority; and research reference tools commonly used in the practice of law. Students will also be introduced to Bluebook citation methods.
Course Objectives:
At the conclusion of the course, you will be able to do the following:
1. Evaluate and understand legal authority structures, identify legal issues, assess source
credibility and accuracy, and formulate a line of legal reasoning using those sources;
2. Use sound methods of legal research; and
3. Properly attribute sources in legal writing, and be able to cite to cases, statutes, regulations,
and secondary sources in Bluebook format.
