current syntactic theories, with a special emphasis on functional approaches to grammar. It aims to explore the differences between \u2018formal\u2019 and \u2018functional\u2019 paradigms for syntactic analysis, with a thorough discussion of their <br \/>1) theoretical premises, <br \/>2) research concerns, <br \/>3) data collection <br \/>4) analytical methodology, and <br \/>5) explanatory principles.<\/p><p>The first half of the class will focus on form-function associations as manifested in the English grammar. The second half will then introduce a variety of functional explanatory mechanisms with illustrations from a wide range of languages.
