Introduction to Materials Science and Engineering (I) [English] - 111 Academic Year

This course is provided by the NYCU Department of Materials Science and Engineering .

This course was filmed in collaboration with National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University "Distinguished Visiting Professorship Program (DVP)" and Department of Materials Science and Engineering.

This class is designed to introduce the student to the fundamental concepts in Materials Science and Engineering – the integral part material science plays in all aspects of engineering. At the end of the class, the student should be able to intelligently discuss material properties based on the following:
  • Atomic bonding
  • Crystal structure
  • Defects
  • Diffusion
  • Mechanical properties
  • Phase diagrams
  • Plastic deformation
  • Strengthening mechanisms in metals
  • Relationship between processing and microstructures
  • Relationship between structure and properties, such as what contributes to a material’s mechanical strength? What makes a material a conductor or insulator? Why do metal objects feel colder than wood objects?

Textbooks:

1. Elements of Materials Science and Engineering, 5th ed., Lawrence H. Van Black, Addison-Wesley, 1985.
2. Introduction to materials science for engineers by James F. Schackelford.
3. Foundations of Materials Science and Engineering, W.F. Smith, and J.F. Hashemi, Mc Graw Hill.
