Syntax and Morphology - 98 Academic Year

本課程是由 國立陽明交通大學外國語文學系 提供。

Language is a coding system. The formal devices used to code information are most relevant to syntax and morphology. This class is designed to explore the central roles played by syntax and morphology in human languages and to introduce the form-function association as realized in the so-called ‘grammatical rules.’ Class lectures will focus on the English grammar and problems in Mandarin will be discussed as group project topics.

課程目標

This class aims to answer the questions: what is grammar and why is there grammar?

The goals of the class are:

1. To familiarize students with the basic constructs in syntactic descriptions and theories;

2. To equip students with conceptual and analytical tools needed for understanding and analyzing the grammatical structure of human language;

3. To enable students to apply what’s learned in class to observations and preliminary analyses of Mandarin data.
